assist in general confidential Secretarial work

when not engaged in taking down and transcribing

shorthand notes.

I therefore, ask your covering authority

for this additional appointment and your sanction

For making the necessary provision in the

Estimates for 1929.

5.

The extra cost of those proposals during

1928 would be $400 on account of Miss Thornhill,

and a sum of $1,400 in respect of the salary of an

additional European lady Stenographer from 1st June,

until the end of the year. To meet this expense

there are savings on the salary of the Chief Clork

amounting to $3,600. Supplementary supply in aid

of this vote will, however, be required to provide

for the pay of the Acting Colonial Secretary during

my absence on full pay leave.

6.

As regards the officers who are classified

under the heading Senior Clerical and Accounting Staff

I would invite reference to pages 3 6 of the

-

enclosed staff list. The Class II officer,

Mr. Gelling, is now on leave, the two Class III

officers are Mr. Lang and Mr. Angus, and in addition

to the probationer, Mr. Witchell, whose name

appears in the Staff List, two other recently

appointed probationers Messrs. Payne and Whitley

are also employed. One of these assists with the

clerical work in connection with matters referred to

Exccutive Council, and the other in the Confidential

Registry. There is thus an excess of two over the

establishment given in Appendix I of the Estimates,

there being a corresponding reduction of one in the

probationers
